Varanasi Ganga Aarti: A Visitor's Guide

The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is an evening ritual of fire, chanting and rhythmic movement performed by a line of priests facing the river. It happens daily, timed to sunset, so the exact clock time shifts a little through the year — we confirm the current timing as part of planning your visit.

Watching from the ghat

Standing on the ghat itself puts you close to the ritual and the crowd. It’s a good option if you want to be near the priests and don’t mind standing among a dense crowd for around 45 minutes.

Watching from a boat

A boat positioned on the river gives a wider view of the full ceremony and the ghat lit up behind it, without needing to hold a spot in the crowd. This is usually the more comfortable option for families or older travellers, and it’s what we arrange by default unless you’d prefer the ghat.

Practical notes

Arrive with some time to spare if you want a boat close to the front — positions fill up as sunset approaches. Photography is welcome from both vantage points, though a boat gives a steadier, wider shot.
